Financial Crisis: Institutions and Policies

Mendel University, Brno, Czech Republic

The financial crisis which started in the second half of 2008 represents one of the most crucial events influencing all economies around the world. While the financial crisis has had its origin in the USA, it seems that some European economies were influenced by the crisis even stronger than the USA. At the same time, the financial crisis has shown so far highly differential impact on the national economies in Europe. This is one of the reasons why the management of the financial crisis poses a key challenge for the European and national institutions.

The conference will explore the implications of the economic and financial crisis for the economic policies (especially from the perspective of monetary, fiscal policies). Emphasis will be on the functioning of the European Economic and Monetary Union. Furthermore, the newly evolving dynamics of the global economy will be addressed by the conference.

Following fields will be discussed:

  1. Political economy and European institutions
  2. Euro and the Crisis
  3. Future of EMU
  4. Impact of the financial crises on economic and monetary integration in Europe
  5. Fiscal policies within EMU
  6. New member states and EMU
  7. Factors behind national differences of effects of the financial crisis
  8. Implication of the financial crisis for the non-EU countries in Europe
